Volunteer
Service isn’t just something we do at Adat Shalom – it’s woven into the fabric of who we are as a reconstructionist community. We believe that living our Jewish values means actively caring for one another within our congregation and extending our hands to support the broader Washington, DC area and beyond.
From supporting fellow congregants during times of need to partnering with local organizations addressing food insecurity, housing challenges, and social justice issues, our service opportunities span a wide spectrum. Whether you have an hour to spare or are looking for a deeper ongoing volunteer relationship, there’s a meaningful way for you to make a difference.
Join us in turning compassion into action – our community is stronger when we serve together.

Hospitality
Hachnasat Orchim—welcoming guests—is a core value at Adat Shalom.
Hospitality is not just a tradition; it’s a vital part of our communal life. Whether we’re gathering for First Fridays, Shabbat onegs, holidays, or special events, we rely on each other to foster welcoming, meaningful experiences.
There are many meaningful ways to contribute. You might choose to help prepare or serve food, greet guests, or lend a hand in the kitchen. These acts of service help create the warmth and connection that define our community.
Not able to volunteer in person? Consider donation to our Hospitality Fund to support meals and gatherings.
Every contribution of time, spirit, or resources helps sustain the welcoming heart of Adat Shalom.

Hesed
Hesed means lovingkindness and at Adat Shalom, it’s how we show up for each other. Whether celebrating a simcha or going through a tough time, the Hesed Committee works to ensure every member feels seen, supported, and cared for.
We organize rides to Shabbat, deliver homemade soup to those who are ill or grieving, check in weekly with elders, match guests with Seder hosts, and offer tech support for everyday needs.
These small acts create a big impact. Whether you can lend a hand regularly or occasionally—from near or far—there’s a place for you.
To volunteer or request support email hesed@adatshalom.net. Show up with heart—because sometimes we give, and sometimes we receive.
Sukkah Building
Annually, as Sukkot approaches, we invite you to take part in helping to build our Adat Shalom’s sukkah! This cherished tradition not only brings the community together but also sets the stage for a week of celebration, connection, and reflection.
We’re looking for volunteers of all skill levels to join us for a few hours of hands-on teamwork as we assemble the sukkah. Whether you’re handy with a hammer or just happy to help carry the s’chach, your help is welcome and appreciated. This is a wonderful opportunity for families, teens, and adults to connect with one another, enjoy the outdoors, and contribute to the beauty and spirit of our holiday.
Snacks and good company will be provided—just bring your energy and enthusiasm!

Leading Services and Reading Torah
At Adat Shalom, we believe in a participatory community—everyone has a voice, and yours is welcome. Whether you’re interested in leading a prayer, reading Torah/Haftarah, or learning how to guide part of our service, we’re here to support you.
Our Shaliach Tzibur and Song Leader, Aaron, will work with you to build confidence and find your place in our shared spiritual life. No experience necessary—just a willingness to learn and lead.
