High Holidays

Two Services, One Community

Every year, more and more people want to spend the High Holy days at Adat Shalom—and eventually, we reached a point where we simply didn’t have enough seats for everyone. It’s a wonderful challenge for a synagogue to face, but a challenge nonetheless. So we reimagined what gathering could look like, making full use of our beautiful campus at 7727 Persimmon Tree Lane to ensure that everyone can feel at home here during these sacred days.

This year, Adat Shalom has two major service offerings for the High Holy Days: the Bayit (House) Service and the Ohel (Tent) Service. Each is a full High Holy Day service in its own right, catering to different needs, connected by a common Adat Shalom style and ethos.

Bayit (House) Service

Immerse yourself in the Bayit (House) Service, where tradition meets innovation and introspection.

This service is the best of Adat Shalom’s years of beautiful High Holy Days, and is rooted in the mahzor with a flexible and self-reflective approach. Enjoy a contemplative atmosphere that’s deeply connected to Adat Shalom, providing a meaningful journey for all. If you love the High Holy Days and love Adat Shalom’s way into them, this service is for you. Led by Rabbi Hazzan Rachel Hersh.

Rabbi Scott Perlo will split his time between the two services including giving his sermon in both. He will spend much of his prayer time supporting the Ohel service.

Advanced registration is required. Please get your tickets here.

Ohel (Tent) Service

Discover the Ohel (Tent) Service, where Jewish worship is brought to life in a modern and participatory setting.

Designed to be low-barrier, this service welcomes everyone from ages 8 to 108. All the core High Holy Day prayers will be there, offered in ways that emphasize participation and joy. With a focus on creating a meaningful and engaging experience, the Ohel Service offers a vibrant and contemporary approach to the High Holidays. Led by Jeff Weintraub.

Rabbi Scott Perlo will split his time between the two services including giving his sermon in both. He will spend much of his prayer time supporting the Ohel service.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Schedules

Parking

There are 3 options for parking this year:

  1. Free handicap parking at Adat Shalom: Parking on Adat Shalom’s campus is only for individuals with a handicap placard for the High Holidays and with advanced registration.
  2. Valet Parking: Adat Shalom has contracted with a valet parking company this High Holiday season. This will alleviate the traffic in the Carderock Neighborhood and make it easier and safer for people coming to Adat Shalom. Valet parking is $20 (includes tip) for each service — Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah Day 1, Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur for members and guests alike. Advance registration is required.
  3. Arranging your own parking: If you choose not to use the valet service, you will have to find your own parking. We urge you to be mindful of our neighbors—park only on the right side of the street, do not block fire hydrants or driveways, and do not park on the grass. Parking on Persimmon Tree Lane is NOT legal. All cars will (and have been at previous events) ticketed and towed. The Carderock Elementary School and Carderock Pool & Tennis Club lots that we have used previous years are CLOSED for parking this year. You will not be able to park there.

Whether you are paying for parking or finding your own arrangements, everyone is welcome to drive up to the front doors of Adat Shalom to drop people off—and we encourage carpools. Please have your tickets ready to show as you enter our campus.

Advanced registration is required. Please get your tickets here.

*Parking on Rosh Hashanah Day 2 will not be valet. The on-campus parking will not be handicap only — anyone may park on campus for this service on a first-come first-serve basis.
